Strings of Genius: Carnatic Instrumental Masters to Grace LearnQuest Music Festival 2026

From legendary violin traditions to boundary-crossing innovation, instrumental virtuosos bring depth and dialogue to the 18th annual festival.

BOSTON — The LearnQuest Academy of Music has announced a distinguished lineup of Carnatic instrumentalists for the 18th Annual LearnQuest Music Festival, scheduled for April 3–5, 2026 across venues in the Greater Boston area, including Thomas Tull Hall at MIT and Regis College.

As the festival approaches its two-decade milestone, it continues to stand as one of New England’s most important platforms for Indian classical music, presenting artists whose artistry reflects both deep-rooted tradition and bold musical exploration.

This year’s featured instrumentalists — Lalgudi G. J. R. Krishnan, V. V. S. Murari, and L. Shankar — represent multiple dimensions of Carnatic violin artistry, from lineage-based tradition to global musical innovation.

In keeping with the 2026 festival theme of collaboration and musical dialogue, the instrumental segment highlights the expressive power of melody and rhythm in conversation — where instrumentalists mirror the human voice, respond to percussion, and explore improvisation in real time.

Below is a closer look at the artists who will bring these traditions to the festival stage.

L. Shankar (Shenkar)

Few musicians embody the spirit of global musical dialogue as powerfully as violin virtuoso L. Shankar, also known internationally as Shenkar.

L. Shankar (Shenkar)

A child prodigy and widely regarded as a musical genius by his peers, Shankar has built a career spanning decades that places him among the pioneers of East–West musical fusion.

An internationally celebrated touring artist, Shankar has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide and collaborated with some of the most influential figures in contemporary music, including Frank Zappa, Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Michael Jackson, and Madonna.

Lalgudi G. J. R. Krishnan

Among the most respected violinists in Carnatic music today, Lalgudi G. J. R. Krishnan stands as a leading torchbearer of the celebrated Lalgudi Bani, the distinctive musical style developed by his father and guru, the legendary Lalgudi Jayaraman.

Born into a distinguished musical lineage that traces its roots to the Tyagaraja shishya parampara, Krishnan represents the fifth generation of musicians in his family. His musical journey began early, performing alongside his father as a teenager and absorbing the aesthetic principles that define the Lalgudi style — lyrical phrasing, rhythmic sophistication, and an unwavering commitment to ensuring that the violin mirrors the nuances of the human voice.

Lalgudi GJR Krishnan

Over a performing career spanning more than four decades, Krishnan has appeared on stages across the world and is widely admired for both solo performances and violin duets with his sister, Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi. Their collaborative concerts are celebrated for their seamless coordination, creative raga interpretations, and intricate command of laya and bhava.

Beyond the Carnatic tradition, Krishnan has collaborated with leading Hindustani and global musicians including Shujaat Khan, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Tejendra Majumdar, and Debashish Bhattacharya. His performances have been presented at prestigious venues such as Lincoln Center and the Smithsonian Institution, reflecting his reputation as a musician who bridges classical purity with contemporary artistic openness.

In addition to his concert career, Krishnan is a prolific composer who has created music for acclaimed dance productions and instrumental ensembles, continuing to expand the expressive possibilities of Carnatic violin music.

V. V. S. Murari

Violinist and violist V. V. S. Murari is widely respected for his versatility, scholarship, and dedication to the preservation and evolution of Carnatic music.

Born into a distinguished musical family, Murari represents the fourth generation of practitioners in his lineage. He trained under his father and guru, the legendary violinist V. V. Subrahmanyam, and later received guidance from the iconic Carnatic vocalist Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer.

Vadakkencheri Srikrishna Murari

Murari’s prodigious talent became evident early in life when he made his solo debut at age ten at the prestigious The Music Academy, accompanied by mridangam maestro Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman.

Over nearly four decades of professional performance, Murari has shared the stage with many of the greatest figures in Carnatic music, including M. Balamuralikrishna, K. J. Yesudas, Aruna Sairam, Bombay Jayashri, and Sudha Ragunathan.

Known for his lucid raga explorations and deeply expressive phrasing, Murari is also recognized as an ideal accompanist whose playing elevates the main artist while maintaining artistic individuality.

Beyond traditional performance, Murari has ventured into creative and interdisciplinary projects, including the innovative Carnatic Philharmonic Orchestra, which blends South Indian and Western classical traditions while preserving the integrity of each. His work as a composer, educator, and cultural organizer has helped nurture a global community of young musicians.

Through initiatives such as the VVS Foundation and SaMaa Arts, Murari continues to mentor emerging talent and support musicians worldwide, reinforcing his role not only as a performer but also as a cultural ambassador for Carnatic music.

While deeply rooted in the Carnatic tradition, Shankar’s artistry transcends genres and cultures, bringing the expressive power of Indian classical violin to audiences across the world. His work has helped introduce global listeners to the richness of Carnatic music while expanding the instrument’s sonic possibilities through innovation and experimentation.

As the LearnQuest Music Festival enters its 18th year, the 2026 edition promises to showcase not only vocal excellence but also the extraordinary expressive range of Carnatic instrumental music.

Through the artistry of these masters, audiences will experience a powerful convergence of tradition, virtuosity, and creative exploration, reaffirming the enduring vitality of Indian classical music on the global stage.
