Alka Singh, who served as president of the BIT Sindri Alumni Association of North America, died peacefully early Monday morning. She was 57.
Born in India on March 20, 1969, Singh built a career spanning telecommunications and software engineering while remaining actively involved with the alumni network of Birsa Institute of Technology (BIT), Sindri, one of India’s longstanding engineering institutions.
She is survived by her husband, Shitanshu Shekhar Singh, and their three children, Akshat Singh, Ayaan Singh and Anika Singh.
Singh was elected president of BITSAANA in October 2025, following years of involvement with the organization, including service as secretary and vice president. The nonprofit represents graduates of BIT Sindri living in the United States and Canada and provides a platform for professional networking, mentorship and philanthropic initiatives.
As president, Singh sought to strengthen connections between North American alumni and their alma mater in Jharkhand, India. Her priorities included increasing alumni engagement, supporting current students and helping BIT Sindri advance toward its goal of becoming a world-class institution.
Her election reflected years of service to the organization and its members. In announcing her election, BITSAANA described her as a longstanding and active member who brought leadership experience and a commitment to alumni engagement. Her vision emphasized collaboration, inclusivity and support for students and graduates.
Singh earned a degree in electronics and communications engineering from BIT Sindri. She began her professional career at Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) as a management trainee in the telecommunications department, where she worked for six years.
After moving to the United States, she transitioned into software engineering and subsequently worked as a project manager. Her career reflected a progression from telecommunications into the technology sector while maintaining ties to the engineering institution where she began her professional journey.
Established in 1949, BIT Sindri has produced graduates who have held leadership positions in industry and technology in India and internationally. Its alumni network has helped maintain professional and personal connections among graduates living around the world.
Through BITSAANA, Singh worked to sustain those connections and encourage alumni to contribute to their institution and support future generations of students. Her involvement reflected a continued commitment to education, professional mentorship and the strength of the alumni community.
Singh’s legacy encompasses her work in engineering and technology, her leadership within BITSAANA, and her efforts to foster connections among graduates of BIT Sindri across North America.
As family, friends and members of the alumni community remember Singh, her life stands as a testament to the professional and personal ties that connect people across generations and continents.
