NEW DELHI, India — Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump held a telephone conversation on Thursday, discussing the steady growth of bilateral ties as well as key regional and global developments.

During the call, both leaders emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum in efforts to expand bilateral trade. Modi later wrote on X, “Had a very warm and engaging conversation with President Trump. We reviewed the progress in our bilateral relations and discussed regional and international developments. India and the U.S. will continue to work together for global peace, stability and prosperity.”

The two leaders reviewed advances under the India–U.S. Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and expressed satisfaction with the strengthening cooperation across sectors.

They also discussed expanding collaboration in critical technologies, energy, defense and security, and other priority areas tied to the implementation of the India–U.S. COMPACT (Catalyzing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce & Technology) framework for the 21st century.

Modi and Trump exchanged views on a range of regional and international issues and agreed to continue working closely to address shared challenges and advance common interests.

Last month, Trump said he plans to visit India soon, calling Modi a “great man” and a “friend.” Speaking at a November 6 press conference at the White House, he said trade negotiations with India are progressing “very well.”

“He’s a friend of mine, and we speak, and he wants me to go there. We’ll figure that out. I’ll go… He’s a great man and I’ll be going,” Trump said. When asked whether he would travel to India next year, he replied, “It could be, yeah.” He also recalled his 2020 visit, saying, “I had a great trip there with the Prime Minister.”

Trump further claimed that India has “largely stopped buying oil from Russia.” His remarks came shortly after the White House said Trump holds “great respect” for Modi and that the two leaders speak “pretty frequently.”

Answering a question about India–U.S. relations on November 4, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump “feels very positive and strongly” about the partnership. “I know the President has great respect for Prime Minister Modi, and they speak pretty frequently,” she said.

On trade discussions, Leavitt added that Trump and his team remain in “very serious discussions” with their Indian counterparts.

“The President and his trade team continue to be in very serious discussions with India with respect to that topic,” she said. (Source: IANS)
