New York– The New York State Senate has adopted a resolution commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Indian Constitution. Introduced by State Senator Jeremy Cooney, the resolution celebrates India’s democratic values and the nation’s shared commitment with the United States to liberty, justice, and equality.

The resolution was officially adopted on Thursday, marking a significant milestone in the world’s largest democracy.

Senator Cooney, who is of Indian origin, expressed his pride in recognizing this historic occasion. Sharing his thoughts on social media, he wrote,
“Today, I had the privilege of introducing a Senate resolution to recognize the 75th Anniversary of the Indian Constitution. As an orphan from Kolkata, India, I’m incredibly proud to celebrate our Indian heritage and this important milestone with my colleagues and all New Yorkers.”

The event was attended by the Consul General of India in New York, Binaya Pradhan, along with members of the Indian-American community, highlighting the strong cultural and democratic ties between the two nations.

“In honoring the 75th anniversary of the Indian Constitution, we also celebrate Indian independence and the countless brave individuals who risked their lives for the betterment of their countrymen,” Senator Cooney said during his address on the Senate floor.

“This is a day of celebration not only in India but around the world. Indians across the globe are making meaningful contributions in their communities. Today is a time to come together to celebrate and reflect on our shared history, culture, and heritage,” he added.

Senator Cooney noted that India was under British colonial rule for nearly 200 years. Thanks to the perseverance of its people and the leadership of figures like Mahatma Gandhi, a decade-long struggle for independence ultimately led to the adoption of the Indian Constitution on November 26, 1949.

“This story of resilience and the pursuit of self-determination is one of the bonds that unite our two great nations,” he said. “The desire for civil and political rights fueled independence movements in both the United States and India, making our countries kindred spirits in the global fight for freedom and sovereignty.”

Cooney also reflected on the personal significance of the anniversary, stating,
“As many of my colleagues in the Senate know, I was adopted from an orphanage in Calcutta. Throughout my life, I’ve worked hard to maintain a strong connection to India and to the Indian-American community here in New York. That connection remains strong as we honor the 75th anniversary of the Indian Constitution.” (Source: IANS)
