Kerala trying to help 40 people duped in Indonesia

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM– As many as 40 people from Kerala, who were cheated by unscrupulous recruitment agents and are now living a tough life in Indonesia, have got assurances from the state government that their woes will end soon.

After knowing of their situation, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Wednesday evening asked the Kerala Associations in Indonesia to come to their succour.

“We have established contacts with Malayali associations there, and they have agreed to immediately see how best they could intervene,” a close aide of Chandy told IANS.

“Tomorrow (Thursday), the CM is going to speak to External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and will seek help to see that these hapless people are either ensured of a proper job or they are able to return,” the aide said.

Most of these people have been in Indonesia for the past one year. The were taken by agents who duped them by taking fees as high as Rs.3 lakh, but they did not get the promised jobs and have been living a life of misery.
