ACTON, MA–The Jallianwala Story (Khooni Vaisakhi), a musical narrative will be staged in Acton, MA, on Sept. 13, 2024.
Presented by Indian Arts Boston at 6: 30 pm at Acton Merriam School, Khoni Baishakhi is a historical ballad of the events that unfolded in Amritsar for a fortnight leading up to the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre on April 13, 1919, killing almost 1,500 unarmed Indians.
That horrific incident was possibly the single largest tragedy that solidified the resolve for the relentless independence struggle of future years. On 29 May 1919, Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, in protest against the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, renounced the knighthood bestowed upon him by the British monarch in 1915.
The history of the Sep 13th event in Acton is even more striking. Nanak Singh was a survivor of the massacre and wrote the book of poems called Khooni Vaisakhi. It was soon banned by the British and all copies destroyed. 60 years later, a manuscript of the book was discovered and published by his family.
Harpreet, a talented singer came together with Navdeep Suri, former ambassador of India and grandson of Nanak SIngh to compile a full album and live performance.
“When you listen to the songs and the narrative, it will be a reenactment of the Jallianwala pathos and emotions from 100 years back,” organizers said in a statement. “Songs will be sung in Punjabi with narration and Q&A in English. The book will also be available for purchase at the venue with potential book signing and photo op with the performers.”
The event will lead to conversations and memories that must not be forgotten. This event is brought to you by a joint collaboration of Indian Arts Boston and Teamwork Arts of India.
“Harpreet and Ambassador Suri are on a global mission to recount a real story of courage and valor,” said IAB President Chitro Neogy. “Bostonians must join the occasion to pay tribute to those for whom we walk free today. “Harpreet and Ambassador Suri are on a global mission to recount a real story of courage and valor; Bostonians must join the occasion to pay tribute to those for whom we walk free today”.
The program has been shown around the world and been appreciated by western audiences in Europe, and hence language will not be a barrier.
