Jaishankar Arrives in New York for UN General Assembly Meetings
New York — External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has arrived in New York for this week’s high-level United Nations General Assembly session, with a packed schedule of bilateral and multilateral meetings with world leaders and senior officials.
He was received on arrival by a delegation of senior Indian diplomats.
Jaishankar is scheduled to address the General Assembly on Saturday during the afternoon session beginning at 3 p.m. local time, or 12:30 a.m. Sunday in India.
In his address, he is expected to present India’s views on major global issues and outline the country’s priorities and concerns before representatives of the United Nations’ 193 member states gathered for the annual high-level meeting.
Before and during the high-level session, which begins Tuesday, Jaishankar is expected to meet national leaders, fellow foreign ministers and U.N. officials.
Some meetings will be bilateral, while others will take place through multilateral platforms. His schedule is also expected to include numerous informal meetings.
India’s aid programs for countries in the Global South, both directly and through the United Nations and other multilateral organizations, are expected to feature in some of the discussions.
Jaishankar will also have an opportunity to make the case for India’s election to the U.N. Security Council when voting is held next year for a two-year term beginning in 2028.
He is expected to discuss India’s six-point manifesto, SHANTU, an acronym for “Securing Holistic Advancement through Norms, Trust [and] Integrity.”
His New York schedule also includes an event at the Asia Society on Sept. 26.
Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman is president of the current General Assembly session.
During last year’s high-level session, Jaishankar held 47 bilateral meetings and took part in 10 multilateral meetings, in addition to dozens of informal discussions with leaders, according to a Facebook post in which he looked back on the week. (Source: IANS)
