Indian Student Killed in Road Crash Near Chicago

CHICAGO — A 25-year-old Indian student was killed and six others were injured in a road crash near Chicago late Saturday, officials said.

The crash occurred around 11:15 p.m. Saturday on Interstate 65 near Crown Point in Lake County, Indiana, according to Indiana State Police.

The student was identified as Navya Gadusu. The Lake County Coroner’s Office said she was pronounced dead at 12:16 a.m. Sunday. Officials said she died from blunt force traumatic injuries suffered in the crash.

The Indian Consulate General in Chicago expressed condolences and said it was in contact with Gadusu’s family, as well as friends and community members assisting those injured.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing away of Indian student Navya Gadusu in a road accident near Chicago. Our heartfelt condolences to her family and friends during this difficult time. The Consulate is in touch with the family of the deceased. We are also in touch with friends and members of community who are assisting those injured in the accident,” the Consulate said in a post on X.

Police said a red minivan carrying seven adults was traveling slowly, at about 10 to 15 mph, behind another vehicle that was reportedly having mechanical problems. A car approaching from behind did not realize how slowly the minivan was moving and tried to swerve left to avoid a collision, investigators said.

The car struck the left side of the minivan, causing it to leave the roadway and go into a ditch, officials said. Police said the vehicle with mechanical trouble was not involved in the crash.

Investigators said the minivan had only two front seats. The other five passengers were seated on boxes of mangoes and were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, police said.

The crash remains under investigation by Indiana State Police. (Source: IANS)
