AMHERST, MA–University of Massachusetts Amherst graduate student Jaskaran Singh, 24, died Friday after being struck by a vehicle at this crosswalk on North Pleasant Street in Amherst near Crestview Apartments, Daily Hampshire Gazette reported quoting a spokeswoman for the Northwestern district attorney’s office.

Jaskaran Singh, of Amherst, died from injuries suffered in the crash, which occurred around 10:30 p.m., Daily Hampshire Gazette quoted spokeswoman Mary Carey as saying.

The driver of the vehicle stopped immediately after striking Singh and cooperated fully with police, Carey said. No charges or citations have been issued.

Singh, from India, was a graduate student in the computer science department at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the newspaper said.

UMass Dean of Students Cara Appel-Silbaugh sent an email to students, staff and faculty about Singh’s passing.

“On behalf of UMass, we extend our sincere condolences to Jaskaran’s family and friends who are mourning his untimely death,” Appel-Silbaugh wrote.

The letter also informed recipients of resources available, including through the Center for Counseling and Psychological Health, even with the campus closed due to the Patriots Day holiday, the newspaper said.

“During this difficult time, I would encourage you to reach out for assistance, or direct others as appropriate,” Appel-Silbaugh wrote.

Amherst Police, Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Northwestern district attorney’s office, and the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section of state police are investigating the incident, Carey said as reported by the newspaper.
