Indian-Origin Golfers Look for Momentum at Truist Championship

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Indian-origin golfers Sahith Theegala, Akshay Bhatia and Sudarshan Yellamaraju will look to build momentum this week as the PGA Tour heads to Quail Hollow Club for the Truist Championship, one of the tour’s Signature events.

The tournament brings together a strong field in North Carolina, with several top players returning to action and others sitting out. For Theegala, Bhatia and Yellamaraju, the event offers a chance to reset and strengthen their standing after encouraging stretches this season.

Bhatia, the only Indian-origin player to win on the PGA Tour this season, enters the event looking to regain form after an uneven run. His year began strongly with a victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, but he later missed cuts at consecutive events, including the Hero Indian Open and the Masters.

Theegala has been steadier, recording four top-10 finishes this season. His results include a tie for sixth at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and his regular appearances in Signature events reflect his growing place on the PGA Tour.

Yellamaraju, an Indo-Canadian golfer, has also made progress this year, posting two top-10 finishes, including a strong performance at The Players Championship.

The field includes several international players in strong form. Cameron Young has already won twice this season, including the Cadillac Championship, and also posted a top-three finish at the Masters. He also won The Players, making him one of the leading contenders at Quail Hollow.

Matt Fitzpatrick also enters the week with considerable momentum after winning three of his last four starts. One of those victories came alongside his brother Alex Fitzpatrick at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

The Fitzpatrick brothers have made history this year as the first siblings to win tournaments on different tours in consecutive weeks. Matt Fitzpatrick’s recent wins also include the RBC Heritage and Valspar Championship.

Alex Fitzpatrick earned his PGA Tour card with the Zurich Classic victory and followed that result with a top-10 finish at the Cadillac Championship in his first start since qualifying.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and Indo-British golfer Aaron Rai are not in this week’s field. Scheffler is resting, while Rai will compete at Myrtle Beach after missing qualification for the Signature event. (Source: IANS)
