Indian American Congresswoman-Elect Pia Dandiya’s Jaipur Roots Draw Attention Following Florida Election Victory
JAIPUR–Indian American Democrat Pia Dandiya’s election to the U.S. House of Representatives from Florida’s 22nd Congressional District has brought renewed attention to her family’s roots in Jaipur, Rajasthan, where several of her relatives continue to live.
Dandiya, a former White House Fellow, educator and Apple employee, defeated Republican Casey Askar in the November 3 midterm elections, securing 51.89 percent of the vote against her opponent’s 48.11 percent.
Her victory marks a significant milestone in her transition from education and public service to national politics.
Although born and raised in the United States, Dandiya maintains strong family connections to Jaipur, where her parents lived before immigrating to America in 1980.
Her father, Dr. Rohit Dandiya, is a physician who earned his MBBS degree from Sawai Man Singh Medical College in Jaipur.
Growing up, Dandiya regularly traveled to Jaipur during school vacations to visit relatives. Those trips continued through her college years, helping her maintain ties with her family’s ancestral hometown.
Her mother pursued a career in education and founded a Montessori school in Jupiter, Florida, where Dandiya received her early schooling.
That family background in education would later influence Dandiya’s professional career and commitment to improving academic opportunities for underserved communities.
At 28, Dandiya founded a high school in Harlem, New York, with the goal of providing quality education to students from low-income families.
Serving as the school’s Founding Principal, she worked to expand educational opportunities for disadvantaged students and prepare them for higher education.
Graduates of the school have subsequently gained admission to leading colleges, reflecting the institution’s efforts to improve academic outcomes for students facing economic barriers.
Her experience working with students and families in underserved neighborhoods helped shape her interest in government policy, particularly in addressing educational inequality and expanding economic opportunity.
Dandiya later served as a White House Fellow, gaining firsthand experience with the operations of the federal government and the development of national policies.
She also worked at technology giant Apple, adding private-sector experience to her background in education and public administration.
Her professional journey eventually led her into electoral politics as a Democratic candidate for Florida’s 22nd Congressional District.
Dandiya’s victory over Askar positions her to represent the South Florida district in the next Congress, which begins in January 2027.
Her election has also generated interest in Jaipur, where her family’s longstanding ties to the city remain an important part of her personal history.
For Dandiya, whose parents left India more than four decades ago, the congressional victory represents a new chapter in a career that has spanned education, technology, public service and now federal elected office. (Source: IANS)
