WASHINGTON, United States — India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Kwatra, met Monday with Republican Representative Jay Obernolte to discuss expanding cooperation between India and the United States in science and technology.

In a post on X, Kwatra said he “enjoyed” the conversation with Obernolte, who chairs the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee’s Research and Technology Subcommittee. He said he highlighted opportunities to deepen collaboration in science, technology, artificial intelligence, and innovation.

The meeting came as part of a series of recent engagements by the ambassador with key Republican lawmakers and congressional leaders focused on trade and economic policy.

Last week, Kwatra met with Jason Smith, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, and vice chairman Vern Buchanan. After the meeting, he posted on X that he briefed Smith on discussions aimed at reaching a “fair, balanced, and mutually beneficial” trade agreement, and thanked him for his support of stronger India-U.S. trade ties.

Kwatra also held discussions with Blake Moore, vice chair of the House Republican Conference, updating him on ongoing trade talks and broader areas of bilateral cooperation.

In addition, the ambassador joined a roundtable dialogue with experts from the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank known for its influence in Republican policy circles. He said the conversation covered priorities in the strategic partnership, including shared economic goals, energy trade, and efforts toward a balanced trade framework.

Kwatra has intensified his outreach across Washington in recent months, meeting members of Congress, trade leaders and policy analysts ahead of expected progress on a first-phase trade agreement between the two countries. (Source: IANS)
