India Welcomes U.S.-Iran Agreement, Doval Says at BRICS Meeting

New Delhi — India has welcomed the memorandum of understanding reached between the United States and Iran, expressing cautious optimism that the agreement will support regional stability, energy security and global commerce, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval said Tuesday.

Addressing the 16th BRICS National Security Advisors’ Meeting, Doval said India hoped the agreement would succeed and ease the economic disruptions caused by the conflict.

“India welcomes the MoU reached between the US and Iran. We have got cautious optimism, and we hope that it will work. It will help energy security. Opting for the State of Homeless is a very welcome development,” Doval said.

He said the agreement could “remove supply chain bottlenecks” and help address shortages of fertilizers, chemicals and other products.

“The freedom of navigation that will be available to the countries in the region and beyond will probably also greatly improve our economic prosperity. We need to be cognizant, friends, of the new security threats and challenges,” Doval added.

U.S. President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed the memorandum remotely on June 17, extending a ceasefire for 60 days while the two countries negotiate the final terms of a broader agreement.

The memorandum ended nearly four months of conflict between the United States and Iran and opened negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear program and regional security issues.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs previously welcomed the agreement as an important step toward ending hostilities, stabilizing the region and restoring trade.

The ministry said sustained dialogue remained the only path toward lasting peace in West Asia and emphasized the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation and the uninterrupted flow of global commerce through the Strait of Hormuz.

India has repeatedly called for de-escalation, diplomacy and dialogue to bring the conflict to an end. (Source: IANS)
