India Faces New Zealand in ODI Series as Preparations Intensify for 2027 World Cup

AUCKLAND, New Zealand– India will begin a five-match One Day International (ODI) series against New Zealand at Eden Park on Wednesday, with both teams looking to strengthen their lineups and address key weaknesses ahead of the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup.

The series represents an important stage in India’s preparations for the tournament, which will be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. With less than a year remaining before the competition, Indian Captain Shubman Gill faces the challenge of finalizing his preferred lineup while managing injuries and player availability.

Conditions in New Zealand could provide valuable preparation for the Indian team, particularly with the 2027 World Cup scheduled to take place in similar conditions in southern Africa.

India will enter the series without two key players, fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah and all-rounder Hardik Pandya. Their absence leaves the team with questions about its bowling attack and middle-order batting combinations.

New Zealand faces its own selection difficulties, with Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman ruled out of the series because of injuries. Wicketkeeper-batter Devon Conway will also miss the opening match after suffering a concussion during a training collision with teammate Matt Henry.

Gill, who leads India in both ODI and Test cricket, has emphasized the need to establish a settled combination before the World Cup.

Following India’s recent ODI series against the West Indies, Gill said there was not “much time to experiment,” signaling his preference for identifying a core group of players who can carry the team into the tournament.

However, the Indian captain acknowledged ahead of the New Zealand series that some positions remain open, particularly the No. 5 and No. 6 batting spots.

While Gill indicated that India’s “top four is set,” he suggested that Axar Patel could be deployed in different positions depending on match situations. KL Rahul could also move to No. 5 as the team evaluates its middle-order options.

India’s bowling lineup remains another area of concern, particularly with Bumrah unavailable. The series will give other fast bowlers an opportunity to establish themselves as reliable options for the World Cup.

Gill also expressed a preference for having the ODI series scheduled before the recently concluded T20 International matches, which would have allowed India to field its strongest available squad throughout the five-match contest.

Instead, several first-choice Test players will be withdrawn from the fourth and fifth ODIs to prepare for the upcoming Test series against New Zealand.

The hosts have adopted a similar approach, selecting separate squads for the opening three ODIs and the final two matches to accommodate players preparing for Test cricket.

For veteran Indian opener Rohit Sharma, the series offers another opportunity to strengthen his record in New Zealand. Despite his success in international cricket, Rohit has yet to score an ODI century on New Zealand soil.

His performances could play an important role in providing India with strong starts as the team works toward establishing a consistent batting combination.

New Zealand, led by Mitchell Santner, will look to take advantage of familiar conditions despite the absence of several established players.

The opening match will be played on a different pitch from the one used during the recent fourth T20 International between the teams, when New Zealand posted 259 runs in 20 overs.

The change in playing surface could produce a more balanced contest between batters and bowlers, although conditions at Eden Park are expected to remain an important factor.

The first ODI is scheduled for November 4 at 7:30 a.m. India Standard Time at Eden Park in Auckland.

The match will be televised in India on Sony Sports Network channels, with live streaming available through the Sony LIV app and website.

India’s squad includes Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill (Captain), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (Wicketkeeper), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Anshul Kamboj, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Gurnoor Brar, Naman Dhir, Auqib Nabi, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan.

New Zealand’s squad includes Henry Nicholls, Will Young, Tom Latham (Wicketkeeper), Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Santner (Captain), Matt Henry, Jacob Duffy, Nathan Smith, Matthew Fisher, Blair Tickner, Tim Seifert and Kyle Jamieson. (Source: IANS)
