PROVIDENCE, RI– India Association of Rhode Island, known as IARI, will commemorate Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Day and advocate for peace, non-violence and tolerance at the Rhode Island State House on Jan. 31.

On this occasion, IARI are inviting students from Grade 5 to Grade 12  to participate in an essay competition and share their views and thoughts  on the topic of Non Violence.

“This competition is open to members and non-members of IARI,” IARI President Nikhil Shah said in a letter sent to IARI members and supporters.

He said that considering today’s political climate, the topic for this year’s competition has been aptly chosen is a quote by Mahatma Gandhi: “An Eye for an Eye only makes the whole world blind.”

Mahatma Gandhi, known as the Father of Nation (India), was a great believer and proponent of the philosophy of non-violence. His actions and philosophy inspired several world leaders like Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Cesar Chavez, Barack Obama and others to bring  about social and political change in the society.

“Today his philosophy is greatly admired throughout the world,” said Shah. “As citizens of tomorrow, you will be responsible in bringing in change and making your mark on the world. In your own words, describe the phrase: “An Eye for an Eye only makes the whole world blind.”
