Himesh Reshammiya Says Every Song Has Its Own Destiny, Reveals ‘Hookah Bar’ Was Composed Years Before Release

MUMBAI– Bollywood music composer and singer Himesh Reshammiya has shared his views on the lasting appeal of Hindi film music, saying that every song has its own destiny and that the timing of its release can be just as important as the composition itself.

Appearing on film trade analyst Komal Nahta’s podcast, “Game Changers: The Music Series,” Reshammiya discussed his creative process and explained why some of his most popular songs were composed years before they eventually appeared in films.

The composer said that producing memorable music requires creative freedom and that strict deadlines can sometimes prevent artists from developing their best work.

“I always feel that if you go in search of a song today, we say that such music is not made. It is not made because if you give me a deadline that I want a song in a month It is possible that a great song can be made. It can be made in a minute too. But it is possible that it is not made. And because of the deadline, when the shooting takes place in the same 15 days or a month then you either have to take the same song that I have made or anyone else has made. And that thing may not be great at that time. But if you have made one thing on time, in which there is no pressure of a time limit and it is great, after that you have made a sample”.

Reshammiya explained that he often develops compositions independently of film projects, allowing melodies to evolve without the pressure of immediate production schedules.

He said he also seeks feedback from large groups of listeners before deciding whether a composition is strong enough to preserve for future use.

“I make people do it. 100-200 people. They say it is a good song. Yes, I tell everyone. After that, if it is good, it comes in stock. And then when it is made after 10 years, 20 years. All my songs were made in the 90s. The tune of ‘Hookah Bar’ came out in 2012. But that song was made in 2004 or 2005”.

The composer cited his popular track “Hookah Bar” as an example of how a song can remain unreleased for years before finding the right opportunity.

Although the track was released in 2012, Reshammiya said its original composition dated back to 2004 or 2005.

According to the musician, a song’s underlying melody and memorable hook are essential to its success, but the timing of its introduction to audiences can make a significant difference.

“So the basic graph is very important. Its hook line is very important. But it is very important to come with the right timing. And that is somewhere where my calculation has worked by the grace of God”, he added.

Reshammiya’s comments highlighted his belief that successful music cannot always be created according to a fixed schedule and that compositions sometimes need years before finding the right film, audience or moment.

For the composer, the combination of a strong melody, a memorable hook and the right release timing remains central to creating songs that continue to resonate with listeners. (Source: IANS)
