New York, NY — Congressman Jim Himes (D-CT, 4th District) voiced strong support for the concerns raised by the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin – Connecticut Chapter (GOPIO-CT) over a proposed $100,000 H-1B visa fee hike, during a virtual meeting held last week.

The meeting, convened by GOPIO Chairman Dr. Thomas Abraham, brought together local business owners, immigration advocates, and community leaders to discuss the Trump Administration’s controversial proposal. Attendees stressed that the drastic increase in fees would severely hurt small and medium-sized businesses, disproportionately affecting Indian-American professionals and entrepreneurs.

“This policy is economically misguided and morally wrong,” said Congressman Himes during the meeting. “We should be doing everything we can to attract and retain global talent, not drive it away.”

Economic and Social Impacts Raised

Dr. Abraham cited data suggesting the H-1B visa program contributes over $200 billion annually to the U.S. economy at a cost of just $8.5 billion. He warned that imposing such a steep fee would prompt highly qualified professionals to seek opportunities in more welcoming countries like Canada, Germany, or China.

“The U.S. stands to lose its edge in innovation and economic growth if we push this talent away,” Dr. Abraham said.

GOPIO-CT President Mahesh Jhangiani added that while large corporations might be able to absorb the fee, small and medium enterprises would be unable to cope. “This is an existential threat to smaller firms that rely on specialized talent but operate on tight margins,” he said, also criticizing what he called “anti-India policies” under the current administration.

Business Leaders and Legal Experts Weigh In

Prasad Chintalapudi, Founder of Panzer Solutions and a GOPIO-CT trustee, explained how his company and others like it contribute to local employment while relying on skilled H-1B holders. “These workers aren’t just filling jobs; they’re creating them,” he said. “Many CEOs—like Sundar Pichai and Satya Nadella—got their start through the H-1B program.”

Shailesh Naik, President of Cameron Engineers, echoed the sentiment, warning that infrastructure firms tied to government budgets simply couldn’t afford the new fee.

Attorney Nandita Ruchandani further broadened the scope of the issue, noting that H-1B visa holders also include doctors, teachers, and engineers who serve underserved communities across the U.S.

“These professionals contribute to the Social Security system, pay taxes, and bolster local economies—but they’re being priced out by this unjustified hike,” Ruchandani said. “This is already causing chaos for businesses and families.”

Broader Asian-American Solidarity

Dr. S.K. Lo, Chairperson of the Asian American Unity Coalition (AAUC), joined the call and offered solidarity. “We must take on these issues collectively,” he said, committing AAUC’s support to the cause.

Congressman Himes: U.S.-India Relations Must Be Strengthened

Congressman Himes, who serves as Ranking Member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and on the House Financial Services Committee, emphasized the importance of a strong U.S.-India relationship. He agreed that delays in resolving bilateral issues need attention and reaffirmed the continuing cooperation between the two nations in trade, commerce, and defense.

He acknowledged that if the U.S. continues to make it difficult for talented immigrants to stay, “it will be a self-inflicted wound that benefits our global competitors.”

GOPIO-CT, a chapter of the international GOPIO organization, has been active for over 20 years in promoting the interests and contributions of Indian-Americans. Through civic engagement, cultural programs, and community service, GOPIO-CT fosters dialogue and supports a diverse, inclusive future for all.

As debates over immigration and global talent intensify in the run-up to the 2026 elections, the organization vows to keep advocating for fair and equitable immigration policies that reflect the nation’s economic interests and its values as a land of opportunity.
