GUWAHATI– The Assam government has set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the circumstances surrounding the death of singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced Wednesday.

Sarma chaired a high-level review meeting with the state’s top officials, including the Director General of Police, CID leaders, and the Chief Secretary, before declaring that the SIT would be composed of some of Assam Police’s “best officers” and operate with full independence.

“We will not spare anyone. The SIT has been given complete autonomy to investigate and will function with utmost professionalism,” Sarma told reporters. “No stone will be left unturned.”

The team will be led by Special DGP (CID) M.P. Gupta, with Rosie Kalita, SSP (CM Vigilance), serving as the Chief Investigating Officer. It will also include Additional SPs, Deputy SPs, Inspectors, and Sub-Inspectors drawn from CID and various districts. All assigned officers will remain on the case until the investigation concludes.

The probe is tied to CID Police Station Case No. 18/2025, registered under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Officials said the SIT has been directed to adhere to strict timelines and maintain transparency throughout the process.

Viscera samples from Garg’s autopsy will be sent to the Central Forensic Laboratory in New Delhi for advanced analysis, Sarma added.

The government’s move comes amid widespread public grief and growing speculation over the sudden loss of Garg, who was revered not only as a playback singer but also as an actor, composer, and cultural ambassador of Assam.

Fans and cultural leaders across the state have called for a thorough and impartial inquiry, and the creation of the SIT is being seen as a decisive step to ensure accountability. Assam Police emphasized that the handpicked officers assigned to the case will work with diligence “until the case reaches its logical conclusion.”

The death of Garg has left a deep void in Assam’s cultural life, and the outcome of the SIT investigation is expected to be closely followed by the public. (Source: IANS)
