BURLINGTON, MA—A group of local singers are presenting “Taraane Pyaar Ke,” a musical evening to celebrate popular Hindi love songs sung by legendary singers Kishore Kumar and Kumar Shanu on Sept. 29 in Burlington, MA.
Why Kishore Kumar and Kumar Sanu?
“When it comes to Hindi cinema, the music industry has produced some great legendary singers, composers and song writers over the years,” says Valentino Almeida, one of the singers and organizers of Taraane Pyaar Ke. “One such legendary gem was Kishore Kumar, the greatest entertainer and one of the most successful playback singer from the Hindi film industry.”
Mr. Almeida said that Kishore Kumar was a musical genius who was blessed with a versatile voice, full of power and rich with emotions.
“He became the voice of India’s top screen actors in the course of a career that spanned over nearly four decades,” said Mr. Almeida. “A devout fan of singer K.L Siagal, a high point in Kishore Kumar’s career came in 1969 with film ‘Aradhana’ after which he became the leading playback singer of Hindi cinema with his own singing style.”
Who can forget songs like ‘Mere Sapnon Ki Rani’? Kishore Kumar paired up with other legendary singers of the time like Mohammed Rafi, Mukesh, Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar to deliver some memorable duets, said Mr. Almeida.
“It won’t be wrong to say that most of India’s leading actors from yesteryears owe their stardom to Kishore Kumar. He was indeed the chosen one who has left behind an unmatched legacy,” said Mr. Almeida.
Demise of Kishore Kumar in 1987 created a vacuum that was filled by another legendary singer – Kumar Sanu whose style of singing was greatly influenced by Kishore Kumar.
Kumar Sanu started his playback career, as Kedarnath Bhattacharya, and in 1989, Jagjit Singh introduced Kumar Sanu to Kalyanji-Anandji. On their suggestion, he changed his name to “Kumar Sanu” because his voice and singing style were much influenced by Kishore Kumar and had his first major
Bollywood song in Hero Hiralal.
Sanu then relocated to Mumbai, where Kalyanji-Anandji gave him a chance to sing in the film Jaadugar. Kumar Sanu emerged as a ‘star’ in Mumbai’s music industry with his own unique singing style.
For the 1990 film Aashiqui, music directors Nadeem-Shravan got Sanu to sing all but one of the songs, for which he won his first of five consecutive Filmfare Award as Best Male playback singer. His next Filmfare Awards were won for songs from the movies Saajan (1991), Deewana (1992), Baazigar (1993) and 1942: A Love Story (1994).
“Event ‘Taraane Pyaar Ke’ on 29th September, hopes to take the audience down memory lane celebrating popular hindi love songs sung by these two legendary singers, who were greatly influenced by their Bengali heritage and Rabindra sangeet,” said Mr. Almeida.
He said his excellent team of singers performing at the event are Mr. Almeida himself, Ajay Koul, Sowmya Shri, Reshma Nair and Neha Verma.
