India Aims for 4-0 Lead Against New Zealand in Fourth T20I as Record Crowd Expected in Auckland

AUCKLAND– India will look to extend its dominance over New Zealand and take a commanding 4-0 lead in the five-match T20 International series when the two teams meet at Eden Park on Friday, with the visitors also considering opportunities to test their bench strength ahead of future international competitions.
Having already secured the series with three consecutive victories, India could make changes to its playing lineup, potentially giving wrist-spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakaravarthy an opportunity to feature against a New Zealand side weakened by injuries to key bowlers.
The match is expected to attract a sellout crowd of nearly 40,000 spectators, potentially setting a new attendance record for a bilateral cricket match in New Zealand.
The previous record of 36,523 spectators was established during a men’s and women’s doubleheader involving India and New Zealand at Eden Park in 2019.
India’s team management faces several selection decisions as it seeks to maintain its winning momentum while providing opportunities to players who have seen limited action in recent matches.
Kuldeep and Varun have featured only occasionally in recent months as India has favored a batting-heavy lineup extending to the No. 8 position. That strategy has delivered strong results in a series characterized by aggressive batting and high scores.
Kuldeep, who appeared in two matches during India’s home series against the West Indies, has yet to play in Wellington during the current tour.
His inclusion could depend on whether India decides to rest Axar Patel or Naman Dhir, although Dhir’s impressive recent performances could make him difficult to leave out.
Varun is another option if the team decides to strengthen its spin attack.
India could also reconsider its pace-bowling combinations following mixed performances from Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who is appearing in his first international series in four years.
Although Bhuvneshwar demonstrated his ability to deliver accurate yorkers during the closing overs in Wellington, he has conceded 139 runs from 72 deliveries in the series.
Prince Yadav, meanwhile, has been preferred over Mayank Yadav for the previous two matches and could retain his place in the lineup.
The availability of wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan remains uncertain after an adductor strain forced him to miss two matches.
If Kishan remains sidelined, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could receive another opportunity to open alongside the in-form Abhishek Sharma, whose explosive batting has been central to India’s success.
Abhishek has emerged as one of the most dangerous batters in the shortest format, regularly providing India with aggressive starts and putting opposition bowlers under immediate pressure.
His remarkable 35-ball century in Wellington was his fourth hundred in T20 Internationals and his 11th century across all T20 cricket, the most by an Indian men’s batter.
Since the beginning of 2025, Abhishek has accumulated 1,984 runs in T20 Internationals at an average of 35.4 and a strike rate of 200.6, including 13 half-centuries and three centuries.
His performances against New Zealand’s fast bowlers have been particularly impressive. According to CricViz statistics, he has maintained a strike rate of 228.3 against Jacob Duffy and 338.1 against Kyle Jamieson.
New Zealand faces a difficult task in attempting to contain India’s powerful batting lineup, particularly after the visitors scored a record 118 runs during the six-over powerplay in Wellington.
The hosts have been further weakened by the absence of Matt Henry and the loss of fast bowler Lockie Ferguson, who has been ruled out of the remainder of the series with a calf injury.
New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner has been one of the team’s more effective bowlers, but he has received limited support from the rest of the attack.
Eden Park’s dimensions and reputation as a challenging venue for bowlers could make the task even more demanding for the home side.
Santner, however, has enjoyed success against Indian wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson, dismissing him four times in seven innings.
India’s batting approach against spin could also become a factor. Statistics show that Indian batters have attempted sweep shots against only 6.6% of spin deliveries in T20 Internationals during 2026.
The potential inclusion of Kuldeep could provide India with an additional advantage against New Zealand’s middle order.
Kuldeep has dismissed Glenn Phillips four times in five innings, while Axar has removed the New Zealand batter on five occasions.
Those matchups could influence India’s bowling selections as the visitors seek to exploit their familiarity with New Zealand’s leading batters.
India also enters the contest with a strong historical record against the Black Caps.
According to CricViz, India has won 22 of its 34 T20 Internationals against New Zealand, compared with 11 defeats and one tie.
The Indian team has won five consecutive matches against New Zealand and nine of its previous 10 T20 Internationals played in the country, including two victories decided through Super Overs.
India has already secured its third consecutive T20 International series victory on New Zealand soil. The hosts last defeated India in a home T20I series in Hamilton in 2019.
With the series already decided, Friday’s encounter provides India with an opportunity to assess additional players while maintaining its unbeaten record on the tour.
For New Zealand, the match represents a chance to restore some pride and find answers to the bowling problems that have allowed India’s aggressive top order to dominate the series.
The fourth T20 International is scheduled for Friday, October 30, at Eden Park in Auckland, beginning at 12:30 p.m. India time.
The match will be televised on Sony Sports Network channels, with live streaming available through the Sony LIV app and website.
