Foiled Hindu Temple Shooting Plot Raises Alarm Among Indian-Americans

WASHINGTON — An alleged mass shooting attempt at a Hindu temple in Aurora, Illinois, has sparked concern across the Indian-American community, prompting condemnation from Indian officials, lawmakers and Hindu organizations calling for stronger security at places of worship.

Authorities arrested 19-year-old Alexandros Paporakis after receiving information about a possible mass shooting. Prosecutors allege that Paporakis, who reportedly held white supremacist and neo-Nazi beliefs, attempted to open fire at the temple on Sunday but was unable to shoot because his rifle jammed.

Investigators said the suspect later told coworkers about the incident and expressed plans to return to the temple. His coworkers alerted police, leading to his arrest before he could allegedly carry out another attack.

Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi of Illinois revealed that he and his family were at the temple when the alleged shooting attempt occurred.

“I am horrified that a white supremacist attempted to carry out a mass shooting targeting Indian Americans at the Hindu temple in Aurora where my family worships. My family and I were there when the attack was attempted last Sunday,” Krishnamoorthi said.

The congressman warned about the dangers of anti-Indian hatred and white supremacy and praised those who helped prevent a potential tragedy.

“I am grateful to the suspect’s coworkers who alerted police and commend the law enforcement officers who intervened. Every American deserves to live and worship without fear, and we must stand together against hatred in all its forms,” he said.

India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, also condemned the alleged attack, describing it as a disturbing example of religious and racial hatred.

“The attempted mass shooting at the Hindu temple in Aurora is deeply disturbing. Racist violence, including anti-Hindu and anti-India hate has no place in a civilized society,” Kwatra wrote on social media.

The FBI’s Chicago field office confirmed the arrest and said it was working with the Palatine and Mount Prospect police departments.

“The FBI aggressively works alongside our local and state law enforcement partners to identify, investigate, and dismantle any threats of violence driven by radical ideologies,” said Ryan Whalen, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Chicago field office.

The incident has prompted Hindu organizations to urge temples and community institutions across the country to review their security measures.

The Hindu Mandir Empowerment Council (HMEC) issued a security advisory to temples within its network, encouraging greater vigilance and preparedness. The organization condemned threats and intimidation directed at religious communities.

The Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies (FIIDS) also denounced the alleged plot and thanked the Palatine Police Department for its response. The group warned that anti-Hindu and anti-India rhetoric could escalate into physical violence against worshippers.

The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) raised concerns about reports that the suspect possessed an AR-style rifle and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

The alleged shooting attempt comes amid broader concerns about the safety of Hindu religious institutions in the United States, following reports of an attack on a Hindu temple in Ohio earlier this month.

Community organizations say the incidents underscore the need for greater coordination between religious institutions and law enforcement to protect worshippers from hate-motivated violence.
