Anupam Kher Honored by Georgia Governor for Contributions to Cinema and Arts
Mumbai — Veteran actor and filmmaker Anupam Kher has received a commendation from Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp recognizing his contributions to cinema, education and the arts, as well as his role in strengthening cultural ties between India and the United States.
Kher shared photos and videos from the ceremony on Instagram, saying he was presented with the honor at the Georgia State Capitol in the presence of First Lady Marty Kemp.
“Standing in the Georgia State Capitol, home of the Georgia General Assembly, I felt a deep sense of gratitude as Governor Brian P. Kemp personally presented me with a commendation from the State of Georgia,” Kher wrote.
He said he also presented the governor and first lady with a Rudraksh mala from the Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi.
“I was honoured to receive it in the presence of First Lady Marty Kemp. I was happy to present them with a Rudraksh Mala from Kashi Vishwanath temple, Varanasi!” he wrote.
Kher said the commendation recognized his work in cinema, education and the arts, along with his efforts to promote ties between India and the United States.
“The commendation speaks of my work in cinema, education and the arts, and of the bond between India and the United States. To have that journey recognised so far from home is deeply moving,” he said.
Kher added that members of India’s diplomatic community in Atlanta, tour promoters and leaders of the Indian community were also present for the occasion.
He said the Georgia commendation was the third honor he had received in the United States during his tour over the past 20 days.
Kher also reflected on the role artists can play in representing their country abroad.
“Actors are not officially appointed to represent their country. But what a wonderful feeling it is to be an unofficial cultural ambassador for India,” he wrote.
He added that sharing Indian stories and art with international audiences comes with a sense of responsibility.
“My heartfelt thanks to Governor Kemp and First Lady Marty Kemp for their warmth and generosity. I will cherish this moment. Jai Hind!” Kher wrote. (Source: IANS)
