One Suspect Apprehended in Kalkaji Gang-Rape Case, Two Others Questioned
New Delhi — One suspect in the alleged gang rape of a 17-year-old girl in south Delhi’s Kalkaji area was apprehended following a police encounter Tuesday, while two others are being questioned, police said.
The alleged assault took place Monday evening at Aastha Kunj Park near Kalkaji Temple.
Joint Commissioner of Police Vijay Kumar said the girl, who is from Faridabad, had come to the area with a male friend who is also a minor. The two first visited a temple before going to the park.
“Yesterday evening, we received a PCR call about a 17-year-old girl from Faridabad, who had come here with a friend, also a minor. They first went to a temple and then to Aastha Kunj Park, which is a little secluded,” Kumar told reporters.
He said the pair encountered three men who allegedly identified themselves as police officers, used language resembling that of police and lawyers, and threatened them with police action.
“They caught hold of the boy and allegedly gang-raped the girl. We received this complaint from the girl,” Kumar said.
Police said the girl underwent a medical examination.
One suspect, identified as Asif, was apprehended following a police encounter Tuesday morning, Kumar said.
“The names of two more people have emerged, and they are also being questioned. Further investigation into the matter is underway. Other arrests in the case will also be made soon,” he said.
The two people being questioned include a man identified as Hemant and his brother, whose identity police did not disclose.
“Hemant has claimed to have studied law while his brother is claiming to be a student of Bachelor of Science. Whatever it is, we are conducting our investigation in a fair and transparent manner,” Kumar said.
Police said investigators are still examining the relationship between the suspects and determining the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault. (Source: IANS)
