Tata Sons Reappoints N. Chandrasekaran as Chairman for Five More Years

Mumbai — Tata Sons said Thursday that N. Chandrasekaran will be reappointed as Executive Chairman for another five-year term after agreeing to reconsider his earlier decision not to seek an extension.
Chandrasekaran had said last month that he would not pursue another term when his current tenure expires in February after the Tata Sons board failed to reach a resolution on extending his leadership.
Tata Sons said Thursday that Chandrasekaran had accepted the board’s request to reconsider and would continue as chairman for five more years after his current term ends.
“The Board received from Tata Trusts their unanimous resolution dated July 28, 2025 expressing their appreciation of the Chairman of Tata Sons, N. Chandrasekaran (Chandra), for his stewardship of the Group from 2017 onwards. In recognition of these efforts, the Tata Trusts resolved that he be re-appointed as Executive Chairman for a further term of five years upon the expiry of his current term,” Tata Sons said.
“At the meeting of the Board on September 17, 2026, Chandra acceded to the Board’s request to re-consider his decision. The Board thereafter resolved by a majority vote to re-appoint him as Executive Chairman for a further term of five years upon the expiry of his current tenure,” the company added.
The announcement comes amid disagreement within the Tata Group. Earlier Thursday, Noel Tata, Chairman of Tata Trusts, which owns a 66% stake in Tata Sons, described the reappointment as “illegal.”
Investors reacted strongly to the news, with several listed Tata Group companies attracting heavy buying interest during Thursday’s trading session.
Tata Group shares rose as much as 14% in afternoon trading following the announcement of Chandrasekaran’s new five-year term and the board’s move toward a potential initial public offering of Tata Sons. (Source: IANS)
