India’s Early Entry Into 6G Coalition Could Help Shape Next-Generation Network Standards

New Delhi — India’s decision to join the United States and 24 other countries in shaping standards and security frameworks for next-generation 6G networks could give New Delhi a role in setting the rules, spectrum policies and trust frameworks expected to define communications technology in the 2030s, according to a new report.
A report by India Narrative said India is shifting from being a major consumer of mobile technology to helping develop the rules and architectures that will shape the next generation of wireless networks.
“India is moving from being a large consumer of mobile technology to a co-author of the rules, architectures and trust frameworks” that will define the next decade, the report said.
The decision was announced after Union Minister of State Jitin Prasada met U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on the sidelines of the G20 Innovation Ministerial.
India’s participation could give its researchers, telecom operators, chip designers and startups an opportunity to influence areas including spectrum policy, security requirements and interoperability before 6G systems are widely deployed.
The report said early participation is particularly important because countries involved in developing wireless standards can gain advantages in patents and telecommunications equipment markets.
India has joined the Call to Action for 6G Leadership and Security, which covers areas including network security, interoperability, resilience and trusted artificial intelligence.
The report described language from Washington as “unusually clear,” pointing to an emphasis on ensuring that 6G reflects “shared security interests” while strengthening competitiveness and promoting innovation.
Formal technical work on 6G is expected to accelerate beginning in 2027, while India’s Bharat 6G Alliance is targeting deployment by 2030, making the timing of India’s participation significant, the report said.
Beyond faster communications, 6G networks are expected to support industrial control systems, autonomous logistics, defense-related sensing and artificial intelligence workloads running on data centers.
“Aligning with partners who treat trusted vendors, supply-chain integrity and AI-in-the-loop as first-order design questions is a form of strategic hygiene,” the report said.
During his meeting with Lutnick, Prasada also called for greater U.S. participation in the India Semiconductor Mission 2.0, stronger cooperation on artificial intelligence technology and a practical mechanism for AI safeguards.
The report said India’s digital public infrastructure, growing semiconductor manufacturing and design ambitions, and large software talent base could allow the country to contribute technological capabilities to the partnership rather than serving solely as a major market for products.
