Sonu Nigam Denies Commenting on Kriti Sanon Raksha Bandhan Ad Controversy

Mumbai — Singer Sonu Nigam has denied making comments about the controversy surrounding Kriti Sanon’s Raksha Bandhan advertisement, saying a social media post attributed to him was not written by him.

A media report had cited a lengthy post from an X account using Nigam’s name. The singer later shared a screenshot of the post on Instagram and clarified that the account does not belong to him.

“This is not me and This has never been me,” Nigam wrote.

The disputed X post had weighed in on criticism of Sanon’s advertisement, arguing that the controversy was not about what women wear but about what it described as hypocrisy surrounding the portrayal of Hindu festivals.

Fans responding to Nigam’s Instagram post noted that the X account belongs to another person with the same name. Nigam has repeatedly said that he does not use X.

Singer Prajakta Shukre also responded to Nigam’s clarification, criticizing both the continued existence of the account and media outlets that attributed its comments to the singer.

“For years, Sonu ji has clearly stated that he is not on Twitter/X and that this account is not his,” Shukre wrote. “Yet the account continues to use his name and share personal opinions as though they are coming from him.”

She also questioned why media organizations had published comments attributed to Nigam without first verifying whether the account belonged to him.

The dispute comes amid backlash over a jewelry brand’s Raksha Bandhan campaign featuring Sanon. In the advertisement, the actress wore a bralette-style blouse with a cape and draped skirt, prompting criticism from some social media users who called the outfit inappropriate for a campaign centered on the Hindu festival.

Sanon later defended the campaign and her clothing choice, saying the meaning of festivals lies in their traditions and emotions rather than in what someone wears.

“The essence of festivals is not in the clothes you wear, it is in the emotions and meaning you hold for the traditions,” she wrote.

Sanon also said she and her sister tie rakhi to each other as a symbol of protection and criticized the tendency to judge women’s respect for culture by their clothing.
