Mohit Suri Calls ‘Awarapan 2’ a ‘Long-Lost Love’ and ‘Old Friend’

Mumbai — Filmmaker Mohit Suri, who recently marked the first anniversary of his blockbuster film Saiyaara, has described the upcoming Awarapan 2 as a “long-lost love” and an “old friend” that he has deeply missed.

Suri, who directed the first Awarapan film, shared the trailer of the sequel on Instagram on Friday along with an emotional note reflecting on his connection with the franchise.

“This one feels special. Like a long-lost love, like an old friend you haven’t met in years but still deeply miss. 19 years later, and this movie still matters so much to me,” Suri wrote.

He thanked director Nitin R. Kakkar for bringing the world of Awarapan back to audiences and praised the team for approaching the film with “love, flourish, sensitivity and heart.”

“To everyone who has worked on this film, most of you I know, have worked with before, and will continue to work with, you’ve done such a brilliant job,” he added.

From Box-Office Failure to Cult Classic

The original Awarapan, which was helmed by Suri, had a difficult run when it was released in theatres. The film was a commercial failure and was eventually pulled from theatres because of its poor box-office performance.

However, its music became a major success, helping the film find a much longer life beyond its theatrical run. Over the years, audiences discovered the movie through other platforms, and Awarapan gradually developed a devoted following, transforming from a box-office disappointment into a cult classic.

Reflecting on the trailer of the sequel, Suri said it brought back numerous memories from the making of the original film.

“Watching this trailer brought back so many memories,” he wrote, while praising writer Billy Siddiqi for expanding the world of the franchise and adding elements that the original team may not have been able to explore nearly two decades ago.

Suri also expressed his pride in actress Disha Patani, writing, “I am so proud of you buddy !! Like always.”

Emraan Hashmi Returns to the World of ‘Awarapan’

Suri reserved special praise for Emraan Hashmi, who starred in the original film and remains closely associated with the Awarapan legacy.

“And last but definitely not the least, my brothers. @therealemraan Emi, my hero, and always, always will be,” Suri wrote.

He said he was confident that Hashmi had given the sequel his all, just as he had done for the original film nearly two decades ago.

Suri also addressed Vishesh Bhatt, describing him as his “little brother” and saying he had now “passed on the baton” to him.

“I’ve passed on the baton to you, and now I can’t wait for the world to see what magic you have created,” Suri wrote, wishing Bhatt and the entire team the best for the film.

The filmmaker concluded his post by urging audiences to watch Awarapan 2 in theatres when it releases on Aug. 14.

“Loved the trailer. All the very best to all of you. Everyone, go watch Awarapan 2 in cinemas on 14th August,” Suri wrote, ending with the iconic line from the franchise’s musical legacy: “Toh phir aao… mujhko satao… mujhko rulao.”

For Suri, the sequel represents the return of a film world that has remained close to his heart for nearly two decades—one that survived an unsuccessful theatrical beginning to eventually earn a lasting place in the memories of its audience. (Source: IANS)
