Sunny Deol Remembers Father Dharmendra as ‘Ghayal’ Marks 36 Years

Mumbai — Sunny Deol paid tribute to his late father, legendary actor Dharmendra, as “Ghayal” completed 36 years since its release.

Sharing a montage of memorable scenes from the film on Instagram, Sunny credited Dharmendra’s faith in him and director Rajkumar Santoshi’s writing for bringing the movie to life.

“Papa’s belief and Raj’s writing , made Ghayal possible. Your love made it immortal, (sic)” he wrote, adding red heart and folded hands emojis.

Dharmendra decided to produce “Ghayal” himself after several producers declined to back the project. His faith in Sunny paid off, with the film becoming one of the actor’s biggest hits.

Dharmendra died at his Mumbai residence on Nov. 24, 2025, at the age of 89.

The film’s leading actress, Meenakshi Seshadri, also marked its 36th anniversary by recreating the song “Maahiya Teri Kasam.”

“Today marks the 36th anniversary of Ghayal — a film that will always hold a special place in my heart. As I reconnect with Indian cinema after three decades, it feels especially meaningful to revisit this beautiful romantic song from the film,” she wrote alongside a video showcasing her dance moves.

“Sunny Deol and I shared some unforgettable films together, and Dacait, Ghayal, and Ghatak each gave audiences a memorable romantic duet. This recreation is a celebration of those cherished memories and of the love you’ve shown us over the years,” she added.

“Ghayal,” which marked Santoshi’s directorial debut, also featured Raj Babbar and Amrish Puri in pivotal roles. Moushumi Chatterjee, Annu Kapoor, Om Puri, Sharat Saxena and Sudesh Berry appeared in supporting roles. (Source: IANS)
