OTTAWA, Ontario — Indian High Commissioner Dinesh K. Patnaik met Canadian Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree on Thursday to discuss strengthening cooperation on security and law enforcement as relations between the two countries continue to improve.
Patnaik said the discussion focused on shared priorities and expanding existing mechanisms for collaboration. “Honoured to meet Minister Gary Anandasangaree. Discussed our shared priorities in enhancing security and law enforcement cooperation between India and Canada. We also explored new avenues for collaboration and ways to further strengthen our existing engagement mechanisms,” he said in a statement from the High Commission.
The meeting followed Patnaik’s visit on Wednesday to the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, where he met several provincial leaders, including Raj Chouhan, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly; Ravi Parmar, Minister of Forests; and Sunita Dhir, Parliamentary Secretary.
He also held talks with Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Jobs, Economic Development and Innovation, and Jagrup Brar, Minister of State for Mining and Critical Minerals. Discussions centered on expanding investment in mining, critical minerals and the energy sector, along with advancing cooperation in quantum technologies, life sciences and gold exports.
The High Commission also highlighted Patnaik’s historic November 24 visit to Treaty 7 land in Alberta — the first-ever visit by an Indian High Commissioner to the region. Patnaik, accompanied by his wife, Poonam Patnaik, met Indigenous leaders to discuss shared histories, cultural ties and future opportunities for collaboration between Indigenous communities in Canada and those in India.
“The High Commissioner conveyed the deep respect and affection that people in India have for Indigenous Nations. He recalled that the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, was deeply moved by the hospitality and cultural richness of Treaty 7 peoples during his meeting with Indigenous Chiefs in Kananaskis in June 2025,” the High Commission said.
