MOSCOW/NEW DELHI– Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, sharing his assessment of last week’s high-profile meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump in Alaska, according to officials in both capitals.
In a post on X, Modi thanked Putin for the call and reiterated India’s position on the conflict in Ukraine. “India has consistently called for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict and supports all efforts in this regard. I look forward to our continued exchanges in the days to come,” Modi wrote.
The two leaders also reviewed aspects of the India-Russia “Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership,” agreeing to stay in close contact as both countries navigate global and regional challenges.
India had earlier welcomed the Alaska summit between Trump and Putin, describing their leadership in pursuing peace as “highly commendable.” In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said, “The way forward can only be through dialogue and diplomacy. The world wants to see an early end to the conflict in Ukraine.”
Putin and Trump met Friday at the Arctic Warrior Convention Centre in Alaska, holding more than three hours of talks alongside senior officials, including Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Both leaders said progress was made toward ending the Ukraine war, but cautioned that no ceasefire agreement was imminent. “It’s not a done deal at all,” Trump told Fox News after the summit, stressing that any settlement would require approval from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
This was Putin’s second call with Modi this month on developments related to Ukraine. On August 8, the Kremlin said Putin briefed the Indian leader on talks with Trump’s special envoy, Steven Witkoff, in Moscow. Modi then reaffirmed India’s commitment to a diplomatic solution and discussed trade and investment ties with the Russian president.
Looking ahead, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is scheduled to meet Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in Moscow on August 21 for the 26th session of the Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technical, and Cultural Cooperation. The talks are expected to cover both bilateral matters and coordination on international issues. (Source: IANS)
