LONDON– Jasprit Bumrah etched his name onto the Lord’s honours board with a superb 5-wicket haul, helping India dismiss England for 387 in 112.3 overs on Day 2 of the third Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy on Friday.
On a quicker Lord’s pitch, Bumrah wasted no time making an impact, removing England’s overnight batters Joe Root and Ben Stokes within the first 30 minutes of play. He then dismissed Chris Woakes and Jamie Smith to complete his 13th five-wicket haul in Tests—his second at Lord’s and the most five-fors by an Indian in overseas Tests, surpassing Kapil Dev.
Despite Root scoring a brilliant 104—his 37th Test century, 11th against India, and eighth at Lord’s—England found themselves struggling at 271/7. However, a resilient 84-run partnership between Smith (51) and Brydon Carse (56), coupled with 31 extras conceded by India, lifted the hosts to a competitive total.
Root reached his century with a boundary off the first ball of the morning, overtaking Rahul Dravid and Steve Smith on the all-time centuries list. But Bumrah soon ended his stay, bowling Stokes with a vicious delivery that crashed into the top of off-stump and then dismissing Root—bowled once again—with a full ball that nipped in sharply.
Chris Woakes was next, edging to the slips on a review, before Smith survived a dropped chance by KL Rahul at slip. Smith capitalized on the reprieve, stroking boundaries off Bumrah and Siraj, and brought up his fifty off just 52 balls.
Carse, too, grew in confidence, hitting his maiden Test fifty as the eighth-wicket stand frustrated the Indian attack. India’s momentum stalled briefly after changing the ball twice, the second time after just 48 deliveries.
After lunch, Siraj removed Smith, who nicked behind to substitute keeper Dhruv Jurel. Bumrah returned to clean up Jofra Archer with a low delivery to claim his fifth wicket, and Siraj wrapped up the innings by bowling Carse around his legs.
