17-Year-Old Arjun Aravind Charged With Murder in Deaths of Mother and Brother in Acton Home

ACTON, Mass. — Seventeen-year-old Arjun Aravind has been charged with two counts of murder in connection with the deaths of his mother and younger brother inside their Acton home Tuesday, according to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Acton Police Chief Douglas Sturniolo said Wednesday that Aravind, 17, of Acton, was taken into custody after police located him inside his mother’s green 2014 Honda Accord on Andrew Avenue in Wayland.

Aravind faces two counts of murder, two counts of assault and battery on a household or family member, two counts of assault and battery, use of a vehicle without authority and theft of a motor vehicle.

The charges stem from the deaths of 45-year-old Sudha Venkatesan and her 14-year-old son, Siddharth Aravind, who were found dead inside their Martha Lane home in Acton Tuesday evening.

Police Called After Family Could Not Be Reached

According to the DA’s office, Acton police received a call from Arjun’s father shortly after 6:37 p.m. Tuesday, August 11, after he was unable to reach members of his family. A tutor who was expected at the home had also been unable to make contact with anyone inside.

The father told police that he had last had contact with his wife, Sudha, early Tuesday morning before leaving for work. Siddharth was last seen around noon.

When officers arrived at the home, they found both victims dead. Siddharth was found on the first floor, while Sudha was found in the finished basement, according to prosecutors.

Both victims had suffered “obvious trauma,” the DA’s office said. The precise cause and manner of death remain pending an examination by the Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Authorities have not disclosed what weapon or weapons may have been used. The DA’s office said that remains an active part of the investigation.

Arjun Allegedly Fled in Mother’s Car

Investigators determined that Arjun was not at the home and allegedly fled in his mother’s vehicle, a green 2014 Honda Accord.

Police alerted other law enforcement agencies and members of the public as they searched for him.

Early Wednesday morning, police in Wayland, responding to an unrelated alarm call at a parking lot on Andrew Avenue, located the vehicle with Arjun inside. He was taken into custody without incident.

The DA’s office said the subsequent investigation indicates that Arjun allegedly fatally assaulted his mother and brother inside their home before fleeing the scene.

The investigation remains active and ongoing, and prosecutors have not announced a motive.

Prosecutors Cite Concerning Online Activity

The DA’s office also disclosed new information about Arjun’s recent online activity.

According to prosecutors, Arjun had recently been demonstrating concerning behavior, including using the internet and ChatGPT to conduct searches involving “theoretical ideas or fantasies regarding killing his family.”

The DA’s office did not characterize the online activity as proof of motive and has not said precisely how investigators believe it relates to the deaths. The significance of those searches remains part of the ongoing investigation.

Court Proceedings

Arjun was arraigned Wednesday morning in Lowell Juvenile Court on charges within that court’s jurisdiction.

Because Juvenile Court does not have jurisdiction over a murder charge, prosecutors said Arjun will be arraigned on the murder charge and related assault charges in Concord District Court, likely Thursday, August 13.

The case is being investigated by the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, Acton Police and the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the DA’s office. Police from Harvard, Littleton, Lincoln, Maynard, Sudbury, Wayland, Westford and Weston also assisted with the investigation.

Community Reaction

The deaths have also prompted an emotional conversation within the Indian American community about mental health, behavioral challenges, stigma and the pressure some families feel to keep serious problems private.

The discussion was sparked in part by Prashanth Palakurthi, who shared INDIA New England News’ earlier report on Facebook and wrote about what he called “misplaced shame.” Palakurthi urged the community to have more open conversations about mental illness, developmental disabilities and serious behavioral or emotional problems, while cautioning that no one should diagnose the family or assume what they may have experienced privately.

Among the responses was a call from Praveen Misra for greater support for young people through schools and community organizations. “We need platform for kids something like Peer support / peer-listening programs through the schools & Community,” Misra wrote.

Other community members echoed calls for greater openness, compassion and professionally guided support for families facing mental health or behavioral challenges, while emphasizing that nothing publicly known at this point establishes what, if any, difficulties the Aravind family may have faced.

Investigation Continues

For now, investigators are continuing to establish exactly what happened inside the Martha Lane home, what led to the deaths and whether the concerning online activity identified by prosecutors has any direct connection to the alleged killings.

District Attorney Ryan described the deaths as an “unspeakable tragedy” and said it was a very dark day for the Acton community.
