JAMSHEDPUR– A 22-year-old man was brutally murdered in Jamshedpur in a chilling case driven by superstition, police said Tuesday.

The incident occurred late Monday night in Garhabasa under the Golmuri police station area. The victim, identified as Ajay, who worked at a local hardware store, was attacked by his friend Sandeep Kumar, who allegedly slit his throat with a sharp-edged weapon.

Locals rushed to the scene after hearing Ajay’s cries and found him bleeding heavily, while the accused stood nearby. Residents apprehended Sandeep on the spot and notified police. Ajay was rushed to a nearby hospital but died during treatment.

Investigators said the weapon used in the attack was recovered at the scene. According to police, the crime appeared premeditated: Sandeep had invited Ajay to his room earlier in the evening, offered him alcohol, and then allegedly carried out the assault once Ajay was in an inebriated state.

“The preliminary investigation suggests the accused believed the victim was practicing black magic on him. This appears to be the main motive behind the murder,” a Golmuri police officer said.

Authorities are probing whether anyone else may have influenced Sandeep’s actions.

Ajay, described by neighbors as the only son of his family, had recently lost his father to illness. His murder has left his mother devastated and the community deeply shaken.

Residents condemned the killing, calling it a grim reminder of how superstition and blind faith can lead to senseless violence. Police have sent the body for post-mortem examination and are preparing formal murder charges against the accused. (Source: IANS)
