White House Calls India One of America’s Strongest Allies, Highlights Trump-Modi Relationship

Washington — The White House has described India as one of the United States’ strongest allies, emphasizing the close relationship between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the Indian leader marked 25 years in government leadership.
“India is one of the United States’ strongest allies, which has been bolstered by President Trump’s good relationship with Prime Minister Modi,” White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said Wednesday.
The remarks came in response to a question about Modi’s political career and his relationship with Trump, highlighting the importance Washington places on personal ties between the two leaders.
Modi marked 25 years of continuous service as a head of government on October 7, having first taken office as Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2001.
He led Gujarat until May 2014, when he became India’s Prime Minister following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s victory in the general election.
The White House statement underscored the strength of U.S.-India relations despite ongoing differences between the two countries over trade and other policy matters. However, it did not include any new policy announcements or bilateral initiatives.
India and the United States have expanded cooperation in defense, technology, trade and strategic affairs under successive administrations, developing a broad partnership without a formal mutual defense treaty.
During Modi’s tenure as Prime Minister, India has sought to expand its international influence through closer engagement with major global powers, stronger diplomatic partnerships and a more prominent role in representing the interests of the Global South.
Modi also received congratulatory messages from international leaders marking his 25 years in government leadership.
Several leaders praised the milestone as a significant political achievement, with some describing it as a “rare achievement in any democracy” and a “powerful testament” to the confidence of Indian voters.
Modi thanked the leaders for their messages and expressed his commitment to further strengthening international cooperation. (Source: IANS)
