BOSTON — One of North America’s premier South Asian fusion dance competitions returns to the city today, Saturday, February 28, as the 17th annual South Asian Showdown takes over the historic Strand Theatre.
In a video interview, founder Rohit Bhambi said this year’s competition promises high-energy performances and a powerful atmosphere as collegiate and academy teams from across the country compete in Bollywood Fusion — a dynamic style blending Bollywood, hip hop, bhangra, classical Indian dance, contemporary, and Tollywood influences.

“Each year, this contest gets bigger and better,” Bhambi said. “You will be locked in from the moment the first foot hits the pulsing music in this phenomenal atmosphere.”
Nine teams representing universities and dance academies nationwide will take the stage, competing for a cash prize and the title in one of the country’s most respected South Asian dance showcases. Organizers say the event has steadily grown in both audience size and national reach over the past 17 years.
The South Asian Showdown is produced by Boston Bhangra and South Asian Nation, nonprofits dedicated to promoting cultural awareness and celebrating South Asian arts in New England.
The competition will be held at 543 Columbia Road in Boston. Tickets remain available online for those looking to experience the vibrant storytelling, intricate choreography, and colorful costumes that define this annual celebration of South Asian culture.
