U.S. Ambassador Sergio Gor Visits Gandhi Smriti, Discusses India-U.S. Ties
New Delhi — U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor visited Gandhi Smriti on Thursday and held talks with Vice Chairman Vijay Goel on India-U.S. relations, cultural exchanges, heritage and tourism.
Goel said the meeting included a discussion on bilateral ties and opportunities to strengthen cultural engagement between the two countries.
“Welcomed H.E. Mr. Sergio Gor, US Ambassador to India, to Gandhi Smriti today. We had a meaningful discussion on India-US relations, heritage, cultural exchange and tourism,” Goel said in a post on X.
Goel presented Gor with a copy of Mahatma Gandhi’s autobiography and a traditional Gandhi charkha. The ambassador also paid tribute at the Martyrs’ Column and toured the Gandhi Smriti Museum.
The visit came about a week after Gor traveled to Jammu and Kashmir, where he said the United States would reconsider its travel advisories for the Union Territory.
“This is an important part of India,” Gor said after meeting Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
Gor described the region as “incredibly beautiful” and said his talks with Abdullah had been productive.
“We just had a very good meeting. We have some follow-ups, so we hope to take them back to Washington, back to Delhi,” he said.
Abdullah said the meeting focused on relations between India and the United States, as well as potential areas of engagement between the U.S. and Jammu and Kashmir.
“There are obviously certain legacy issues that over time we will be working to resolve, but we look forward to taking this conversation further,” Abdullah said.
He added that discussions would continue between Gor and Washington, as well as between the Jammu and Kashmir government and New Delhi.
“We are hopeful that the engagement between the US and Jammu and Kashmir will both widen and deepen in the years ahead,” Abdullah said.
