JAIPUR– Two businessmen from Jodhpur died under mysterious circumstances in Thailand after their bodies were found in the swimming pool of their hotel, authorities and family members said. The cause of the drowning is still unclear.
The victims were identified as Anil Kataria, owner of Jiman Restaurant in Ratanada, and Harish Dewani, an internationally known glass artist who operated a specialized glass workshop in the same neighborhood. Both men were on vacation with their wives and children, who remain in Thailand.
According to early information, the incident took place on the evening of December 1. The two reportedly entered the pool for a swim when one of them began to struggle, and the other may have drowned attempting to save him. Officials have not confirmed the sequence of events.
After the pair failed to return to their rooms for nearly 90 minutes, their wives raised an alarm and alerted hotel staff. CCTV footage later showed both men drowning. Hotel personnel retrieved the bodies soon after.
Harish’s elder son and a relative of Anil have since arrived in Thailand to complete the legal and formal procedures. The process is believed to be finished, and the bodies are expected to arrive in Jodhpur by Thursday evening. The families have not issued any public statement.
Shock and grief have enveloped the Ratanada neighborhood, where relatives and neighbors have gathered but remain largely silent due to the emotional impact. Sources said Anil’s elderly father has not been informed about the deaths because of health concerns.
Dewani was widely respected for his expertise in trans-print glass engraving and his sandblasted glasswork, which drew visitors from India and abroad. He also trained international students online, helping spread the niche craft globally.
