TiE StartupCON 2017 will be held from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm at the Hynes Convention Center located at 900 Boylston Street, Boston.

Juliette Kayyem, author, journalist, CNN security analyst and founder of Juliette Kayyem Solutions LLC, providing strategic security advice on technology, risk management, venture capital and more, will be the closing keynote speaker at this year’s StartupCON.

Kayyem will focus on how companies can be resilient and maintain strong growth while also navigating the political, economic and social uncertainties of the 21st century. She has served as policy advisor on security issues to both former Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and President Obama. She played a pivotal role in major operations including handling of the H1N1 pandemic and the BP Oil Spill response; she also organized major policy efforts in immigration reform and community resiliency.

Paul Liberman, COO and Co-Founder of Boston-based DraftKings, and Ash Ashutosh, CEO and founder of Actifio, will kick off the conference in a with a fireside chat led by Jacqueline Lender, Startup Manager for the City of Boston. Ashutosh and Liberman will talk about pathways to exponential growth in the New England region, sharing the highs and lows of their founder journeys and key challenges and opportunities to scaling a successful business. Both Actifio and DraftKings were founded here in MA and are valued at over $1 billion. Actifio helps over 2700 global enterprise customers and service provider partners in more than 37 countries around the world virtualize their data. DraftKings is a fantasy sports website allowing users to play against other users for cash prizes.

One of TiE StartupCON’s keynote sessions will feature Eveline Buchatskiy of One Way Ventures, a new fund specifically for immigrant founders, Jeff Bussgang of Flybridge Capital, sponsor of XFactor Ventures, a new microfund focusing on female-founded companies, and William Crowder, Entrepreneur-in-Residence at the new Multicultural Innovation Lab, launched by Morgan Stanley to invest in high growth companies with female or multicultural leadership. The session will dig into new funding strategies – and the business case – to level the playing field for all entrepreneurs  and unlock the full potential for innovation in the U.S.

“Diverse founding teams will have a better perspective on market opportunities, how to define and  promote products for the widest possible audience” said Bussgang, “they will make better decisions and be more successful in attracting and retaining talent. All of which should lead to superior investment  returns.”

XFactor Ventures, One Way Ventures, and Morgan Stanley’s Multicultural Innovation Lab seek to move the needle on the issue of diversity and see more investment in founders of all backgrounds,  abilities and identities.

“The immigration experience is fundamentally an entrepreneurial act. It builds the character that leads to  so many successful startup stories and accounts for more than half of the tech unicorns” said Buchatskiy.  “It’s about time we pay more attention to this phenomena, and leverage its tremendous positive impact  for  continued  innovation  leadership  and  social  well being  in  the  US.”
