Theegala, Rai Set for Wyndham Championship as FedExCup Playoffs Near
Greensboro — Sahith Theegala and Aaron Rai will lead the Indian-origin contingent at this week’s Wyndham Championship, the final tournament of the PGA Tour’s regular season.
Akshay Bhatia and Sudarshan Yellamaraju will skip the event as they prepare for next week’s FedExCup Playoffs. All four players are already inside the top 70 in the FedExCup standings and have qualified for the opening playoff tournament.
The playoff field begins with 70 players before being reduced to 50 for the second event and 30 for the season-ending Tour Championship.
Theegala enters the Wyndham Championship after a strong comeback season following an injury-plagued 2025 campaign that caused him to miss the FedExCup Playoffs for the first time in his career.
The 28-year-old Indian American has returned to full fitness and re-established himself as one of the PGA Tour’s most consistent performers.
His best results this season include a tie for eighth at The American Express, seventh at the Farmers Insurance Open, sixth at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and 10th at the Texas Children’s Houston Open. He also tied for 11th at the U.S. Open.
Rai, who is 35th in the FedExCup standings, returns to Sedgefield Country Club after winning the Wyndham Championship in 2024.
He added the biggest victory of his career earlier this year by capturing the PGA Championship, becoming the first Indian-origin golfer to win a men’s major title.
In Thursday’s opening round, Rai will begin on the 10th tee alongside Tom Kim and J.T. Poston. Theegala will start from the first tee with Jackson Koivun and Hideki Matsuyama.
Although Theegala and Rai are safely inside the playoff positions, several prominent players will arrive in Greensboro needing strong finishes to extend their seasons.
