Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran to Step Down, Will Not Seek Reappointment

NEW DELHI — Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran has resigned from his position and will not seek reappointment when his current term ends in February 2027, according to a report by NDTV Profit citing sources.
The development comes days before Tata Sons’ annual general meeting, scheduled for Aug. 18.
In a statement, Chandrasekaran reflected on his four decades with the Tata Group and nearly 10 years leading its holding company.
“I have completed 40 years of professional life at the Tata Group. I am grateful for the immensely satisfying opportunity to contribute to this venerable institution. Leading Tata Sons over the past decade has been a great honour and a profound responsibility,” he said.
Chandrasekaran has served as Chairman of Tata Sons and the Tata Group since January 2017. He began his career with Tata Consultancy Services as an intern in 1987 and rose through the company to become Chief Executive Officer in 2009 before eventually moving to the top role at Tata Sons.
According to the report, Tata Sons had outlined conditions in July 2025 for a possible extension of Chandrasekaran’s tenure. These included keeping the holding company unlisted and reaching a resolution over the stake held by the Shapoorji Pallonji Group.
Tata Sons is the principal investment holding company of the Tata Group. Tata Trusts owns about 66 percent of the company.
Chandrasekaran’s planned departure comes as the conglomerate continues to manage the restructuring of several businesses while addressing broader questions surrounding ownership and capital structure.
Shares of several Tata Group companies came under pressure following reports of his resignation.
Tata Consumer Products fell more than 1 percent to Rs 1,066 on the NSE, while Tata Consultancy Services also declined sharply in morning trading.
Titan Company shares were down 1.03 percent at Rs 5,075.10, while Tata Power fell 0.9 percent to Rs 376.60. (Source: IANS)
