Sunny Jain to Bring ‘Love Force’ to Stockbridge Theatre in High-Energy Celebration of Music, Identity
DERRY, N.H. — Indian American artist Sunny Jain will present his latest theatrical work, Love Force, at Stockbridge Theatre on April 18 at 7 p.m., offering audiences a vibrant blend of live music, storytelling, and movement.
The performance, which may particularly resonate with the South Asian community in the region, explores themes of identity, justice, and belonging through a deeply personal lens. Jain’s first theatrical production draws from his own autobiography and family history while inviting audiences into an immersive, high-energy experience that blurs the line between performer and spectator.
At the heart of Love Force is the concept of satyāgraha, a philosophy of nonviolent resistance meaning “holding firmly to truth,” first articulated by Mahatma Gandhi during India’s struggle against British colonial rule. The idea was later adapted by B. R. Ambedkar and Martin Luther King Jr. as “soul force” and “love force,” emphasizing compassion as a means of confronting injustice.

Through music and narrative, Jain examines hierarchical systems, religion, and cultural traditions, reflecting the layered identities many immigrant families navigate. The production’s soundscape draws from a wide range of influences, including South Asian baraat (wedding procession) music, Bollywood classics, and the Black American jazz tradition—shaped in part by Jain’s studies with renowned musicians such as Kenny Barron, Ted Dunbar, and Michael Carvin.
The result is an energetic, communal experience designed to foster what sociologists describe as “collective effervescence,” a shared emotional connection often associated with gatherings and rituals.
Love Force premiered earlier this year at Symphony Space in New York City as part of the Under the Radar Festival and has been developed through residencies and support from institutions including Wesleyan University and various New York arts programs.
The production is directed and developed by Katie Pearl, with lighting and projection design by Jeanette Oi-Suk Yew and Courtney Gaston, and sound engineering by Kenien Spann.
Jain will perform alongside a live ensemble featuring Alison Shearer (alto saxophone), David Adewumi (trumpet), Jasim Perales (trombone), Julia Chen (keyboards and percussion), and Almog Sharvit (bass and percussion).
The event aligns with the mission of Stockbridge Theatre, which aims to inspire artists and audiences through dynamic performances and inclusive cultural programming. Organizers say Love Force offers not only a performance, but a shared experience—one that uses rhythm, story, and community to explore both personal and collective histories.
