South Asian Bar Association Elects Saraa Basaria as President, a New Board

BOSTON— The South Asian Bar Association of Greater Boston has elected Saraa Basaria as its new president and a new board of directors for 2016.

Basaria is an attorney at Gordon & Rees LLP. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Florida and her law degree from Northeastern University School of Law.

Other officers of SABAGB are Priya Amar, Vice President; Manleen Singh, Secretary; and Thanos Matthai, Treasurer. SABA GB’s board members are Amoli Pandya, Manmeet Kaur Desai, Amal Bala, Avni J. Amin, Karishma Jiva, Bharat Moudgil, Neil Patel, and Rashima Shukla.

SABAGB also celebrated its 11th Annual Gala & Awards Dinner in December at the Taj Boston. Attorneys, law students, and members of the community gathered to honor the numerous achievements of the South Asian legal community.

Aloke Chakravarty, Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts, delivered the keynote address. He described his participation in the prosecution of the defendants in the Boston Marathon bombing trial and encouraged members of the community to engage in public service.

Manleen Singh, an attorney at Robins Kaplan LLP, received the Annapoorni R. Sankaran Board Member of the Year Award. SABA GB gives this annual award to a board member who has gone above and beyond the call of duty in furthering SABA GB’s mission of community service, legal education, and promoting the interests of the South Asian community.

Samia Kirmani, an attorney at Jackson Lewis P.C., and Ameek Ponda, an attorney at Sullivan & Worcester LLP, received the General Member Award, which SABA GB presents to members or partner organizations in honor of their outstanding contributions. Sonja Marrett, a student at Boston College Law School and winner of SABA GB’s 2015 Public Interest Law Student Fellowship, shared her experiences from her summer internship. The Gala closed with a performance by the Triveni School of Dance.
