May is National Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and a month to celebrate diversity and service across the United States.

MBTA / MassDOT selected SAHELI as their National Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month Community Service Award recipient. For over a decade, this Committee has led the efforts of both raising awareness and celebrating cultural diversity within their organization. Their national theme in 2016 is “Walk Together, Embrace Differences, and Build Legacies”.

The Diversity Committee acknowledged Rita Shah’s notable achievements in leading and promoting Saheli’s mission to empower South Asian women and their families to live safe and healthy lives. Their own mission aligns very closely with that of Saheli.

Saheli, located in Burlington, MA, is an organization dedicated to helping women cope with domestic abuse and offers many free services to survivors.

At a ceremony on May 9that the State Transportation Building, Shah accepted the award on behalf of all Sahelis and was joined by Saheli’s Program Coordinator Katherine Hurley and Shah’s husband Rajesh Shah.

Congratulations to SAHELI and Rita Shah, a well-deserved award for your two decades of dedication to empowering South Asian women and their families to lead safe and healthy lives.
