Report Urges India to Prepare for Possible U.S. Interference Amid Shifting Global Dynamics

WASHINGTON/NEW DELHI — A new report from the New Delhi-based Vivekananda International Foundation has urged India to prepare for what it describes as the possibility of sustained American interference in its domestic affairs, as geopolitical tensions continue to evolve in the Middle East.

The report argues that India should adopt a broader strategic outlook and recognize what it calls the limitations of European strategic autonomy compared to its own position.

While New Delhi continues to diversify economic partnerships, the report cautions that it should not assume continental Europe would intervene if India’s independent foreign policy were to draw “Anglo-American displeasure.”

“The events of 28 February 2026 show how unbridled US power can prove threatening for any region’s stability. From a national security perspective, New Delhi must now seriously anticipate the possibility of persistent American interference in its domestic affairs, both covert and overt, much as France had already begun to do within a week of Donald Trump’s inauguration in January 2025,” the report stated.

It further recommended strengthening counterintelligence measures.

“Given that Trumpian America seeks to inflict on others whatever it perceives they lack the capacity to do by way of reprisal, boosting counterintelligence coverage of all US activities, official and unofficial (including media and NGO activism) is a prudent course of action for every state,” the report said.

According to the foundation, elements of what it describes as U.S. unilateralism predate the current administration. The report contends that India was “unfairly targeted” by Anglo-American narratives during former President Joe Biden’s tenure over issues related to foreign-based Khalistani activists.

“Those who were terrorists in India, became ‘dissidents’ in the Western media,” the report said, drawing parallels with how critics of Iran have been portrayed internationally.

The report also referenced remarks made by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the 2026 Munich Security Conference, where he described the United States as a “child of Europe.” It said some analysts interpreted portions of the speech as an appeal for Europe to align more closely with U.S. global leadership.

“What some analysts noticed however, was the full-throated celebration which Rubio paid to Europe’s history of colonial conquest, resource extraction and racially-motivated Western superiority over other civilizations. He seemingly presented Europe with a choice: join the American quest to rebuild Western hegemony, or risk irrelevance,” the report stated.

It characterized the message as reflecting a broader geopolitical shift and suggested that Europe’s economic and energy ties with the United States could limit its room for maneuver.

“At a time when the European continent is being forced into energy dependence on the US through an extortionate trade deal … there is perhaps not much that Brussels or other EU capitals can do,” the report said.

The foundation’s analysis comes as global alliances and power dynamics continue to shift amid ongoing conflicts and economic realignments. (Source: IANS)
