DUBLIN– The Indian Embassy in Ireland has confirmed that it is in contact with Irish authorities following a violent, racially motivated assault on an Indian national in Tallaght, a southwestern suburb of Dublin, over the weekend.

“Regarding the recent incident of physical attack on an Indian national that happened in Tallaght, Dublin, the Embassy is in touch with the victim and his family. All the requisite assistances are being offered. Embassy is also in touch with the relevant Irish authorities in this regard,” the Embassy posted on X (formerly Twitter).

The incident, which occurred around 6 p.m. on Saturday, involved a group of young men who reportedly beat and partially stripped the man, who is in his 40s and originally from India. According to The Irish Times, the victim was rescued by passersby and later taken to Tallaght University Hospital for treatment. He was discharged early Sunday morning.

Ireland’s national police service, An Garda Síochána, has launched an investigation, treating the case as a potential hate crime. The attackers allegedly accused the man of inappropriate behavior around children—a claim that was later circulated online by several far-right and anti-immigrant accounts. Authorities have since dismissed those accusations as baseless.

Investigators suspect that some members of the group involved may also be connected to other recent unprovoked attacks targeting foreign nationals in the Tallaght area.

Paul Murphy, a local representative from the People Before Profit party, condemned the attack. “It’s horrifying to see a vicious attack like this happen in our neighborhood,” he said. “Responsibility lies not just with those who perpetrated the violence but also with those who have been spreading racist lies. The community is really shocked and outraged and will stand together against violence, hate, and division.” (Source: IANS)
