NEW DELHI– OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, announced Friday it will open its first office in India later this year, underscoring the country’s fast-growing role in artificial intelligence adoption and innovation.

The office, to be located in New Delhi, will serve as a hub to support India’s millions of students, educators, developers, and professionals who rely on OpenAI’s tools. It also aligns with the government’s IndiaAI Mission, a national program to promote trusted and inclusive AI development.

“The level of excitement and opportunity for AI in India is incredible,” said Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI. “India has all the ingredients to become a global AI leader — amazing tech talent, a world-class developer ecosystem, and strong government support. Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in making advanced AI more accessible across the country.”

India has emerged as OpenAI’s second-largest market after the United States, with weekly active ChatGPT users growing more than fourfold in the past year. The country also ranks among the top five developer markets globally on the OpenAI platform and has the world’s largest student population using ChatGPT.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw welcomed the move, calling it a recognition of India’s digital leadership. “With strong investments in public digital infrastructure, AI talent, and enterprise-scale solutions, India is uniquely positioned to drive the next wave of AI-led transformation,” he said. “We welcome OpenAI’s partnership in ensuring the benefits of AI reach every citizen.”

OpenAI has already registered a legal entity in India and begun hiring for local roles. The new team will work closely with government agencies, businesses, academic institutions, and developers to build features and tools tailored for the Indian market.

The company also plans to host its first Education Summit in India this month, followed later in the year by a Developer Day, bringing together startups and enterprises shaping the future of AI in the country.

OpenAI’s local presence is expected to strengthen use cases already emerging in India, ranging from AI-powered agriculture and smarter recruitment systems to governance tools. The company said further details about the office’s location and operations will be announced in the coming months. (Source: IANS)
