Modi, Trump Review Trade, Defense and Technology Ties in Phone Call
New Delhi — Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump held what Modi described as a “productive conversation” on Wednesday, reviewing cooperation between India and the United States across trade, defense, energy and critical technologies.
The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the India-U.S. Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and agreed to remain closely engaged as the two countries seek to expand cooperation.
“Had a productive conversation with President Trump. We reviewed our bilateral cooperation in trade, defence, energy, critical technologies and other areas. We agreed to maintain close engagement to take our Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership forward,” Modi said in a post on X.
“We also exchanged views on regional and international issues, including ongoing efforts to advance global peace and security,” he added.
The Prime Minister’s Office said Modi and Trump discussed regional and international developments as well as efforts to promote global peace and security.
“Both leaders agreed to remain in touch,” the PMO said.
The call comes as U.S. officials have signaled plans to deepen ties with India and are working toward a possible presidential visit to India early next year.
In June, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the Trump administration was seeking to arrange such a visit.
“I look forward to returning myself before the end of the year and setting up a presidential visit in the early parts of next year,” Rubio said.
Asked whether Trump could visit India next year, Rubio said, “We’re hoping. That’s what we’re working towards sometime early next year to have the President come.”
Rubio has also emphasized the importance of the relationship between Trump and Modi, pointing to cooperation in economics, supply chains, critical minerals, energy, security and freedom of navigation.
U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has similarly described the relationship between Trump and Modi as an important part of broader India-U.S. ties.
“The President and Prime Minister are great friends, and that’s something that goes back years ago, and it’s something that will continue to go years ahead,” Gor said. (Source: IANS)
