NEW DELHI– Acclaimed music composer Mithoon says he doesn’t create music to defy industry trends but instead focuses on staying true to the vision of the filmmaker.
His latest composition, “Dhun,” from the upcoming romantic drama Saiyaara, has been striking a chord with audiences. But does he see the soulful track as a counterpoint to today’s fast-paced, high-stimulation music landscape?
“A song is a song—whether fast, slow, or however people want to categorize it,” Mithoon told IANS. “I don’t subscribe to those labels. I never consciously attempt to create something just to make it different from what’s trending. All of my inspiration is rooted in the director’s vision.”
When asked what inspired Dhun, and whether a personal emotion shaped the song’s tone, Mithoon explained: “The tune, as always, comes from the story—the script, the situation, and the characters. Of course, Mohit [Suri] and I go back two decades, so we don’t necessarily need to draw on personal emotions to create something meaningful. But I’m glad the song is resonating with listeners.”
Mithoon, best known for his iconic hit “Tum Hi Ho” from Aashiqui 2, also composed and wrote “Sanam Re,” one of the most-streamed Hindi songs on YouTube. The track earned the title of “Most Streamed Song of 2016” at the Global Indian Music Academy Awards.
Directed by Mohit Suri, Saiyaara tells a heartfelt story of love, memory, and loss. The film features debutant Ahaan Pandey as Krish Kapoor, a struggling musician, and Aneet Padda as Vaani Batra, a young writer diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.
The film’s soundtrack is a collaborative effort, featuring music by Mithoon, Tanishk Bagchi, Sachet–Parampara, Vishal Mishra, Faheem Abdullah, and Arslan Nizami. Playback legends like Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal lend their voices to the emotionally rich album. (Source: IANS)
