Massachusetts Governor Declares August 15 ‘India Day’
Boston — Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has proclaimed August 15 as “India Day” in recognition of India’s Independence Day and the contributions of Indian Americans to the state’s economy, culture and civic life.
Healey signed the proclamation on August 1, recognizing the anniversary of India’s independence from British rule in 1947. Lieutenant Governor Kimberley Driscoll and Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth William Francis Galvin also endorsed the proclamation, according to the American Bazaar.
State officials encouraged residents across Massachusetts to recognize and celebrate India Day on August 15.
The proclamation noted the size of the global Indian diaspora, with more than 36 million people of Indian origin living outside India, including more than five million in the United States.
It also highlighted the contributions of Indian Americans in Massachusetts across entrepreneurship, public service, education, innovation, healthcare and scientific research.
“The Indian American population in Massachusetts has made significant contributions in fields such as medicine, science, technology, education, business and public service, enriching the cultural and economic fabric of the Commonwealth,” the proclamation said.
Massachusetts officials also recognized the Indian American community’s longstanding celebration of India’s Independence Day through cultural and community events.
“The Indian American community across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts continues to honor this important occasion with events that celebrate India’s rich cultural heritage, democratic values, and enduring commitment to peace and progress,” the proclamation said.
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has separately declared August 15 as “India Day” in the city, according to the American Bazaar.
India gained independence from British rule on August 15, 1947. The country will mark its 80th Independence Day on August 15. (Source: IANS)
