Mumbai– Renowned playback singer Kumar Sanu reflected on the lasting appeal of 1990s Bollywood music, calling it a “golden era” marked by meaningful lyrics, soulful melodies, and a passionate audience that helped make the songs timeless.
Speaking about his journey and continued recognition, Sanu said such appreciation keeps artists motivated. He acknowledged that while good music is still being created today, it is produced in smaller volumes compared to the 90s.
“The 90s era was a golden era,” Sanu told IANS. “We were lucky to have great lyrics, great music, and an encouraging environment. People genuinely listened to our songs, and that’s what made them immortal. Recognition from organizations through awards gives us courage and makes us feel proud of what we’ve achieved in life.”
Sanu also praised the current generation of musicians, saying that today’s singers are talented and some are making noteworthy contributions, even if the overall output of quality music has decreased. “All singers today are very talented. There’s no doubt about that. The era we experienced was different, but some of today’s artists are creating good music—just in smaller quantities,” he said.
The veteran singer, known for numerous chart-topping hits in the 90s, recently paid tribute to legendary singer Kishore Kumar on his 96th birth anniversary. Sanu said Kishore Kumar has been the biggest influence on his musical career and has guided him through every stage of his artistic journey.
Posting a black-and-white photo of Kishore Kumar on Instagram, Sanu wrote: “Remembering Kishore Da on his birthday today… You were my guru, my guiding light. Every note I sing carries a part of your soul. Your voice lives on in all of us, and your blessings have shaped my journey. I miss you deeply… today and always.” (Source: IANS)
